Before Our First Session

How we work together.

A short note from Ming on what coaching is, where change actually happens, and what I'll ask of you along the way.

Where the real change happens

WHAT OTHERS SEE Results · Goals · Skills WHAT DRIVES THEM Thoughts · Feelings Beliefs · Values Identity
Above the waterline
Results, goals, skills, behaviors

How you come across in a meeting, an interview, or a document. This is what others see, and where practical advice helps.

Below the waterline
Thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values, and the story you tell about yourself

This is what drives everything above the line, and it is where coaching does its work.

Most people come to coaching for something above the waterline: a promotion, an interview, a decision. We'll work on that. We'll also spend time below it, because that is where the promotion, the interview, and the decision are actually won.

Coaching is

  • A partnership. You are the expert on your life and your career. I bring questions, structure, and honest reflection.
  • A place to think out loud, see your situation differently, and decide what to do about it.
  • Focused on awareness, action, and who you are becoming, not only on the next job title.

Coaching is not

  • Therapy. Coaching looks forward and builds on your strengths. It does not treat anxiety, depression, or the past. If that kind of support would serve you, I'll say so, and coaching can run alongside it.
  • Consulting. I won't hand you a plan and send you off. The answers that last are the ones you find.
  • Mentoring. My career is not the template for yours, though my experience is available when you want it.

Coaching and career consulting: how I blend them

Most of our time is coaching. When my experience could help, from product management and leadership inside large organizations to hiring and AI, I'll ask first:

"Would input from me help here, or should we keep coaching it?"

You choose, every time.

What I ask of you

  • Bring a topic to each session.
  • Say the true thing, not the polished thing.
  • Take one action between sessions. Small counts.
  • Tell me if something isn't working.
